Police Chief Jason IrvinPolice Chief Jason Irvin began his law enforcement career in 1997 as an officer with the Chattanooga Police Department.  Prior to joining the Town of Smyrna, Irvin worked with the Chattanooga Police Department serving as the Assistant Police Chief from 2017 until his retirement earlier this year.  Over the past twenty five years he worked his way through the ranks of the Chattanooga Police Department serving as director of training, lieutenant in internal affairs, patrol supervisor, sergeant in internal affairs, property crimes investigator, major crimes investigator, school resource officer and patrolman. Irvin holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and is a 2015 graduate of the 259th session of the FBI National Academy.



Jeff Dwyer-command staffAssistant Chief Jeff Dwyer began his law enforcement career in the United States Air Force, Security Police, where he served from 1983 until 1989.  He returned home to Smyrna following his military service, joining the Smyrna Police Department in 1990.  He worked his way through the ranks of the department, serving as a patrol officer, Corporal in the Patrol Division, and Sergeant in the Patrol Division.  In 1997, Dwyer was promoted to Patrol Captain. While serving with Smyrna Police Department, Captain Dwyer continued to further his education.  He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University, and graduated from the FBI National Academy, Session 204, in 2001.  


Assistant Chief John LiehrAssistant Chief John Liehr has served with the Smyrna Police Department since 1994. He worked his way through the ranks of the department, serving as a patrol officer, a Field Training Officer, Corporal in the Patrol Division, Sergeant in the Patrol Division, detective, Detective Sergeant of Narcotics, and Detective Sergeant of the Detective Division.  He holds an Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice from Middle Tennessee State University, a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from St. Leo University, and  Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from Nova Southeastern University and is a 2024 graduate of the 288th session of the FBI National Academy.



Captain James ScottAdministration Captain James Scott has served with the Smyrna Police Department since 1995. He has served as a patrol officer in the Patrol Division. While working as a patrol officer he has been assigned to work as a SWAT officer, Bike Patrol Officer, and Field Training Officer. In 2002 he was promoted to the Detective Division where he was assigned as a general investigator. In 2015 he was part of a team to implement and administer a department wide software upgrade that included Computer Aided Dispatch and Records Management software .  In 2020, he was assigned to work in the Administration Division. While working with the Command Staff he assisted in budgetary planning, implementation and systems integration. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Middle Tennessee State University


Bobby Gibson-command staff - Copy (2)Operations Captain Bobby Gibson began his law enforcement career with the Smyrna Police Department in 1995.  He worked his way through the ranks of the patrol division serving as a patrol officer, K9 officer, Corporal in the Patrol Division, Sergeant in the Patrol Division, SWAT Team Commander, and Sergeant in the Training Division.  In 2023 he was promoted to Patrol Captain.  He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Middle Tennessee State University.
